Summer vs Winter Wedding in the Dolomites: Which Season Should You Choose?

Oct 4
5 min read

The Dolomites are one of those wedding destinations where the season completely changes the experience. A summer wedding means green alpine meadows, outdoor ceremonies, long days, and mountain activities. A winter wedding means snowy peaks, ski villages, fireplaces, and a much cosier atmosphere. Both are beautiful, but they suit very different weddings. Here's how to choose.

Summer Wedding in the Dolomites

For most couples, summer is the easier choice. From June through September, the mountains are much more accessible. Cable cars and mountain huts are open, guests have plenty to do, and you have far more options for an outdoor ceremony. The scenery is also completely different from the winter postcards: green valleys, wildflowers, forests and huge grey peaks in the background.

The biggest advantage is flexibility. You can have your ceremony outdoors, drinks on a terrace, and potentially dinner outside. Guests can spend the rest of the weekend hiking, taking cable cars to viewpoints or having lunch at mountain huts. You also have much longer daylight hours for photography.

The downside is that mountain weather can change quickly. Rain and afternoon storms are possible even during summer, so I would only choose a venue if you genuinely like its indoor Plan B too.

Which Summer Month Is Best?

June – Green, beautiful and generally quieter than peak summer. Check that your chosen lifts and mountain venues have opened for the season.

July – Long days, green landscapes and everything in full summer mode. One of the easiest months for an outdoor wedding.

August – Beautiful but busy. Accommodation can be in high demand because this is a major European holiday month.

September – A great option for fewer crowds and cooler temperatures. Just check seasonal closing dates if you're marrying later in the month.

Best Areas for a Summer Wedding

I'd particularly look at Val Gardena and Alpe di Siusi. Val Gardena gives you the best balance between spectacular scenery and practical villages such as Ortisei and Selva.

Alpe di Siusi is my choice if the dream is an outdoor ceremony surrounded by huge green meadows and mountains.

Alta Badia is another strong option if food and quieter luxury are priorities, while Cortina works well if you want more of a luxury resort-town experience.

Winter Wedding in the Dolomites

Winter is less flexible, but potentially much more atmospheric. This is when the Dolomites become the snowy Alpine destination most people recognise: ski slopes, mountain lodges, fireplaces and villages surrounded by white peaks. Rather than trying to recreate a summer wedding indoors, I would embrace winter completely. Think candlelight, warm interiors, long dinners and perhaps skiing with your guests the following morning.

The biggest reason is the experience. A snowy destination wedding in the Italian Alps feels genuinely different. Winter is particularly good for a smaller wedding where guests stay together for several days and turn the celebration into a ski or mountain weekend.

The trade-off is logistics. You'll have shorter daylight hours, colder temperatures, and more potential disruption from winter weather. Accommodation can also become expensive during Christmas, New Year, and popular ski weeks. And although snow is likely during the main winter season, you can never guarantee perfect snowfall for one specific wedding date.

Which Winter Month Is Best?

December – Festive and romantic, but Christmas and New Year can be busy and expensive.

January – One of my favourite choices for a proper winter wedding. You're firmly within ski season but past the Christmas rush.

February – Excellent for snow and skiing, but accommodation demand can be high during school-holiday periods.

March – More daylight and still within the ski season in the major resorts, although snow conditions become increasingly dependent on altitude and weather.

Best Areas for a Winter Wedding

I'd put Cortina d'Ampezzo and Val Gardena at the top.

Cortina is ideal if you want a glamorous Italian ski-resort wedding with luxury hotels, restaurants, and plenty for guests to do.

Val Gardena is better if skiing and the mountain experience itself are central to the weekend.

Alta Badia is another beautiful choice for a quieter, more intimate luxury winter wedding.

Which Is Easier for Guests?

Summer. Road conditions are easier, guests need less specialised clothing, and there are more activities suitable for different ages and fitness levels. That becomes particularly important for a larger destination wedding.

Winter works best when your guests are comfortable with cold-weather travel - and even better if many of them actually enjoy skiing or winter holidays.

Which Is More Expensive?

There isn't a simple winner. July and August can be expensive because of summer demand, while Christmas, New Year, and peak ski weeks can make winter accommodation particularly costly. If budget matters, I would look at June or September for summer and dates outside the major holiday weeks for winter.

What About Spring and Autumn?

I would be cautious with April, May, October and November. These are transition periods in the mountains, and some hotels, restaurants, mountain huts, and cable cars close between the summer and winter seasons. You can absolutely find a beautiful wedding date during these months, but check what will actually be operating before booking.

Summer or Winter: Which Should You Choose?

For most destination weddings, I would choose summer. It's easier for guests, gives you more venue possibilities, and lets you make the most of the mountain scenery. But if you genuinely love winter, don't choose summer simply because it's more convenient. A snowy Dolomites wedding with fireplaces, candlelight and a few days of skiing can be incredibly special. The easiest way to decide is to picture your wedding photos. Green meadows and dinner outside? Summer. Snow-covered mountains and a cosy candlelit reception? Winter.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best month for a summer wedding in the Dolomites?

June and September are great if you want to avoid peak summer, while July gives you long days and the full summer mountain experience.

What is the best month for a winter wedding in the Dolomites?

January and February are strong choices if snow and skiing are important. December is beautiful for a festive wedding, while March offers more daylight.

Can you have an outdoor wedding in the Dolomites?

Yes. Summer is much better suited to outdoor ceremonies, although you should always have a good indoor backup because mountain weather can change quickly.

Can you have a snowy wedding in the Dolomites?

Yes, especially during the main winter season, but snowfall and snow conditions on one particular wedding date can never be guaranteed.

Is a summer or winter Dolomites wedding better for guests?

Summer is generally easier, particularly for larger or mixed-age groups. Winter is fantastic if your guests enjoy skiing and winter travel.

When should you avoid a Dolomites wedding?

Be more careful with April, May, October and November. These fall around the transition between the main summer and winter seasons, when some lifts, hotels and mountain businesses may be closed.
